What is fun for one town or one town is not fun for 60 towns or 70 planets. But often enough its not about being powerfull, its more about not devolping the mechanics for middle and late game. Many of them start to fail in middle and late game. Good strategy games like civ or pardox games are about mechanics and story telling in process of the game. Would you say you play Stellaris more for the Immersion/stories or more for the minmaxing and map painting and do you agree with my assesment? I am curious where the people here stand I only say that the design goals of what the game is supposed to be should be clear to both the devs and the player base. I dont wanna say that all fluff should get removed from a skill game or all skill tests from an immersion game. Lastly I wanted to say that I am of course aware that most players both like some roleplaying and some minmaxing. I think some players will be unhappy whichever decision they take but it would make for a better game after all. I feel like the Devs should get a clearer vision if they want to get more into a roleplaying direction like ck2 did or if they want to make a more competitive focused game like EU4 or HOI4. There are bugs and problems that bother me of course but not in this area at least. I play unoptimized enough that the AI isn't completely useless against me and at the same time imbalances are just part of the story for me( Robots are superior life forms after all ). I at least dont really care about these problems. I think that people playing the game for the challenge or for competing in Multiplayer are legitimately annoyed by these problems as they are experiencing design issues going against what they are playing the game for.Īt the same time I have a feeling that these issues are probably not that big of a deal for more roleplaying types of gamers or people who are just interested in seeing what stories this game can generate. I think the amount of interlocking features that these goals require necessarily lead to an overwhelmed AI and hard to impossible to balance gameplay in multiplayer. Many systems in Stellaris seem to be designed to provide an immersive experience and recreate many sci-fi tropes and storylines. I think a lot of the rage in the forums about bad AI or imbalanced stuff is a direct result of this conflict. What I noticed recently however is that Paradox Games seem to be in a very awkward middle ground between these design paradigms and Stellaris seems like the worst case of that to me. I think games fulfill at least these 3 different desires (Simulating, Immersion, Optimization) and different people have different needs of what they want in their games. I think this is in general a good design decision as Immersion and Simulation Accuracy can stand in the way of providing meaningful choices for a competitive and skilltesting game and vice versa. I feel that most games that are made with these intentions in mind are generally not designed to be played in a competitive way and also vice versa for competitive games like LoL or Counter Strike. Things like optimizing the way I play or getting really skillful at winning are mostly uninteresting to me and I mostly choose the games I play based on these criteria. When I play video games I am mostly interested in either deep simulators of complex systems (Dwarf Fortress for example) or in Roleplaying in the environment provided to me by the game (Be it Single player games with a focus on story or more open "Roleplaying Simulators" like CK2 for example). ![]() ![]() We tested the latter on our 200-mile fuel-economy route, where it exceeded its EPA highway estimate by 3 mpg. A Passport with all-wheel drive does a little worse, with ratings of 19 mpg city and 24 mpg highway. The front-drive model is expected to earn up to 20 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. With a single engine choice and either front- or all-wheel drive, the Passport has two different EPA ratings. Our Honda Passport Put Function Before Form.Forget About Cabin Fever and Camp in Your Car.The ride is comfortable on most roads, and the steering is pleasingly direct, which makes the Passport feel nimble. Still, the Passport was quick in our testing, and it dutifully accelerates on the highway. However, the two-row Honda has a rough ride when it does venture off-road, and its high ride height contributes to a top-heavy demeanor. The SUV boasts 7.5 inches of ground clearance (8.1 inches for all-wheel-drive models), and the Passport can tow up to 5000 pounds. Those who want the all-terrain capability of all-wheel drive can add it for extra coin otherwise, the Passport is front-wheel drive. Under the hood is the same 280-hp 3.5-liter V-6 and nine-speed automatic transmission as found in the Pilot. The Passport EX-L is our pick as the best value because it’s reasonably priced and includes features such as leather upholstery, a sunroof, and a large touchscreen with smartphone-mirroring functionality. The rest of the lineup is unchanged except for a small increase in starting prices. The 2021 Passport only receives a small update for the new model year, with base models adding a newly standard 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system versus the old 5.0-inch display. Despite these quibbles, it is one of our highest-rated SUVs. Its main demerits include so-so fuel economy and some occasionally fussy interior controls. We chose it as our favorite two-row mid-size crossover in a comparison test over the Ford Edge, the Nissan Murano, the Chevy Blazer, and the Hyundai Santa Fe on these merits and because it’s good to drive, with confident handling. Its standard V-6 engine is powerful, and its interior is practical and capacious. Sharing many of its mechanicals with the three-row Pilot and Ridgeline pickup, the Passport uses a familiar name from Honda’s 1990s lineup but is fully modern, with plenty of standard safety equipment and optional tech features. Spacious, capable, and nicely equipped for the money, the Honda Passport hits its marks as a mid-size SUV, which earned it an Editors' Choice award. ![]() ![]() “House of the Dragon” is more racially diverse from the outset, but the damage - and its thin defense - remains. That certainly pops up in “Thrones,” which was criticized from the start for barbaric depictions of its only characters of color and their eventual submission to a white leader, Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke). They coincide with the rise of colonial power - various European countries’ attempts to define their own heritage, partly because they want to put that heritage in opposition to the people they are attempting to conquer.” “They actually come from the 19th century, and they have the hang ups of the 19th century. “The study of the medieval period in Europe and a lot of our conceptions of the medieval period in Europe are not in any way accurate,” Finn said. Finn said that sequence has similarities with the early modern Henry VIII, who hosted multiple tournaments that coincided with his wives giving birth, but never quite went as planned. Something like the tournament in Episode 1 of “House of the Dragon” is a prime example, embellishing medieval jousting tournaments in which participants used blunted weapons that couldn’t actually cause bodily harm. “Maybe what you’re saying is true about England in 1250, but that doesn’t mean that it’s true about the Holy Roman Empire.” “When we say this is how it was in the Middle Ages, where and when are we talking about?” Carroll rhetorically asked. Even the exact years can be disputed depending on region. The era includes around a thousand years of history and multiple continents, particularly Europe, parts of Northern Africa, and parts of the Middle East. Shiloh Carroll, author of “Medievalism in A Song of Ice and Fire and Game of Thrones,” the problem with any generalization about the Middle Ages is that the era covers an immense range of time and geography. At this point, the violence in TV fantasy like “House of the Dragon” is more emblematic of “Thrones” itself than of the actual Medieval era.Īccording to Dr. The show’s graphic content and glorified violence is a choice - and not always a historically accurate one. Martin’s “Fire & Blood” quickly lays out events from this chapter of Westerosi history, but adapting that for the screen means depicting scenes often described in a few words or sentences, like Daemon’s justice, or adding new elements, like the crabs. ![]() The latest episode, “Second of His Name,” again includes images of soldiers being eaten alive by crabs, culminating in the defeat of the “Crab Feeder” (Daniel Scott Smith) at the hands of Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith), who arrives on the battlefield dragging a severed torso, innards trailing behind it.Ĭontent warning or not (the episode contained a warning for graphic violence, among others), “House of the Dragon” is clearly trying to outdo its predecessor and itself with graphic spectacle. “House of the Dragon” debuted with its metaphorical medieval guns akimbo, with a graphic C-section, jousting tournament, and a scene in which criminals are dismembered as punishment. When “ House of the Dragon” premiered on HBO, there was little doubt in the minds of “ Game of Thrones” fans that the show would be just as bloody, ruthless, and violent. ![]() However, it isn't spectacular because of how manipulative it can be narrative-wise and-fairly or unfairly-how it doesn't present any introspection or bird's-eye view of the entire situation. A story that deserves to be told, to be certain. Overall, "Phoenix Rising" ends up being a solid-and often heartbreaking-documentary. This doc really doesn't play fair, in that aspect, and Warner is such an easy target that such subtle stylings easily go unnoticed. For example, Wood's fractured parental structure is played for sympathy, while Warner's similar upbringing is used to demonize him. There are also a few times where "Phoenix Rising" is downright manipulative. The fact that no introspection exists here from Wood was a bit disappointing-it's all about going after Warner. Again, that isn't to say that I distrust anything Wood is bringing to the table here-only that we are only getting her interpretations of events here and we're all sort of the hero of our own story. For example, I think a reasonable assumption can be made that there might exist some personal/familial factors that contributed towards Wood's long-term association with Manson. That being said, "Phoenix Rising" is very much Wood's story-not a comprehensive account of relationship violence as a whole. In almost every sense, Warner deserves to be investigated and vetted for everything Wood accuses him of, as if true it constitutes severe abuse (if not outright domestic slavery, at times). I have absolutely no doubts that she was subjected to intense torment at his hands. If you are using Web Profiles, click on Edit. Some of the descriptions are truly not for the faint of heart. Make sure that View Display Names is enabled, then click OK. For the most part, "Phoenix Rising" is Wood's harrowing tale of how Warner brutalized her (physically and emotionally). After escaping the relationship, Wood becomes a strong advocate for legislation that promotes a longer statute of limitations for women to pursue prosecution against their abusers. Wood details how, after beginning a relationship with Brian Warner (also known as Marilyn Manson), she was "groomed" by him, or sexually and psychologically tormented for many years. For a very basic overview, this doc tells the story of Evan Rachel Wood, an actress probably most famous for her current role on the HBO hit "Westworld". As long as the viewer understands what "Phoenix Rising" is-and what it isn't-it can be appreciated. Without a doubt, there are some actors who’ve become instantly recognizable as a result of appearing in a long-running TV ad campaign.A documentary of this nature (psychological/sexual abuse) is always going to provoke strong opinions.
